The YA Hot List: I Am Number Four … and More

As the hotly anticipated release of “I Am Number Four” approaches, we thought we’d take a look at what other young-adult film adaptations are in the works. Turns out teen books are hotter than ever – there are a large number in development, with many set to release in 2012 or 2013.

“Fallen”

Based on the novel Fallen by Lauren Kate
Status: In development, set for release 2012
Why so buzzy? Liam Hemsworth (he of Miley Cyrus paramour fame) is said to be interested in the project. Additionally, Disney optioned the series back in 2009.

“The Hunger Games”

Based on the first book in the Hunger Games series, by Suzanne Collins.
Status: Announced, set for release 2013
Why so buzzy? Um, it’s The Hunger Games. The book trilogy that has sold millions of copies and has legions of passionate fans (including Kristin Chenoweth, who’s publicly tweeted her love for the series). Plus, Gary Ross (“Pleasantville”) is set to direct.

“Incarceron”

Based on the book Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
Status: In development, set for release 2013
Why so buzzy? Taylor Lautner is attached to star.

“Matched”

Based on the book by Ally Condie
Status: In development, unknown release date
Why so buzzy? Disney emerged triumphant from a bidding war over film rights against Paramount. Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gigbot (“Step Up 3D”) are set to produce.


“The Maze Runner”

Based on The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Status: In development, set for release 2013
Why so buzzy? Catherine Hardwicke (director of “Twilight”) is attached to the project, and a screenwriter was recently announced as well.


“The Mortal Instruments” (City of Bones)

Based on the series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
Status: Pre-production, set to release 2012
Why so buzzy? Lily Collins (“The Blind Side”) has been cast as Clary Fray and Alex Pettyfer (star of “I Am Number Four”) has been the name most mentioned in connection with the role of Jace.
