Back in December, it was announced that director Joe Wright and his period-piece muse, Keira Knightley, were collaborating on a film adaptation of Tolstoy’s classic novel, Anna Karenina. This film would mark the third collaboration between Knight and Wright, including “Atonement” and “Pride and Prejudice.” Our always astute Word & Film readers reacted to the casting decision of Knightley with varying levels of glee or doom. We are still on the fence as to whether or not Knightley has the chops to play as legendary an Anna as Greta Garbo once did in “Love.”
Now Variety reports on the new casting murmurs for the male roles in “Anna Karenina.” Jude Law and Aaron Johnson are said to be in talks to star in Wright’s project, though there’s no word yet on what parts they are considering. Although we were amused with Johnson’s performance in “Kick-ass,” we became officially impressed with the young British actor after he portrayed a young John Lennon in 2009′s “Nowhere Boy.” He numbers among the young actors we are predicting to shoot up to A-list status over the next few years.
How do you take the news that Law and Johnson might join the cast of “Anna Karenina”? What roles are they best suited for?
