30 Days of our Favorite Book-to-Film Adaptations

Here at Word & Film, we treat the Academy Awards like the Superbowl — there are wagers made, parties thrown, and tears shed, all in the name of great movies.

Movies based on books have always had their moment in awards shows, though it seems as though they are getting more recognition lately. When Peter Dinklage recently took home a Golden Globe for his performance in “A Game of Thrones,” he was quick to thank George R.R. Martin and his “prolific imagination.” Director Alexander Payne also squeezed in a shout-out to Kaui Hart Hemmings (author of The Descendants) as the music was cutting him off during his acceptance speech when “The Descendants” snagged a Golden Globe for best drama.

To properly honor the 2012 awards season, we are doing something new this year. From now until the Academy Awards ceremony on February 26, each day we’ll shine the spotlight on great book adaptations of years past that were either nominated or won an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay. Our fellow cinephiles at IMDB help by providing the movie trivia that is sure teach you something new and give you great cocktail party fodder.
