Molly Ranson as Carrie.
Tonight the much-anticipated revamp of “Carrie: The Musical” opens in New York City. The musical became the stuff of legend after flopping notoriously hard back in 1988. The new Off Broadway version has been given a serious makeover (and some super special effects, I’ve heard), and seems destined to impress fans of both Stephen King’s novel and Brian De Palma’s 1976 film. Tickets are impossibly sold out already, so it looks like Carrie’s no longer an outcast.
Speaking of swine in peril, The UK’s The Guardian adapted “The Three Little Pigs” into a short film meant to illustrate its principle of “open journalism.” Dunno if I learned about journalism, but if this was a trailer for a full-length film, I’d watch the hell out of it.
While we’re in fairy tale land, you should know that Disney is reviving its live-action “Cinderella” project. You’ll be seeing more of this kind of thing: after the success of Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland adaptation (and the pending success of the live action Snow White) Disney has decided that its mighty “Princess” franchise needs fresh blood, which means bigger, newer movies.
Back into the realm of proper adult interests: HOLY CRAP, have you seen the new “Avengers” trailer? Gathering the past few years’ versions of Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America under one roof is the best idea ever. And it saves time — if the movie turns out to be not-so-hot, then we’ve still only suffered one bad sequel instead of four.
