A cult classic of gonzo journalism, some consider Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. The late author lived a life of chaos and adventure and chronicled many of his adventures in his writing, sharing the shenanigans with readers everywhere.
In 1998, Terry Gilliam directed the film adaptation of Fear and Loathing, casting the wildly appropriate Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke, the autobiographical character in Thompson’s novel. Co-starring are Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire, Ellen Barkin, Gary Busey, and Christina Ricci. The movie, though brilliant, didn’t receive any nods at the Oscars or Golden Globes, but Gilliam was nominated for the respected Palme d’Or at ’98′s Cannes Film Festival.
That same year, the documentary “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson” was released, and directed by Alex Gibney and narrated by Johnny Depp.
