It shouldn’t have surprised anyone that fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier’s latest show was totally cinema inspired — he’s designed the costumes for everything from “The Fifth Element” to Peter Greenaway’s “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.” This latest collection was mainly inspired by the upcoming film “Confession of a Child of the Century,” adapted from the novel by Alfred de Musset.
Meanwhile, shoe designer Christian Louboutin has allowed himself to be inspired by this fall’s Blu-Ray release of Disney’s “Cinderella,” unveiling a set of sparkling slippers fit for a charwoman-cum-princess. Okay, not everyone is wild about them, but if it was popularity he’s after, he’d never have made (for example) these 8-inch en pointe heels.
Director M. Night Shyamalan is already batting negative a-million. Do you think he’ll play it a little safer with his next film to convince everyone that he really is worthy of being taken seriously again? Of course not. The AVClub points out that the upcoming “After Earth” will star Will Smith as someone — presumably an actual human being — named “General Cypher Raige” (here’s the entire plot synopsis). It makes one wonder whether Night’s ever met a real general. Or anyone at all, except people who just nod thoughtfully and say “Hmm, yes, good idea!” while signing checks.
