With the series finale of Showtime’s popular series ‘Weeds‘ less than a month away, fans (including us) eagerly await creator Jenji Kohan‘s next project. Fortunately for ‘Weeds’ enthusiasts, Kohan will remain true to her television roots, as she partners with Netflix to develop a 13-episode series based on Piper Kerman’s prison memoir, Orange Is The New Black. Kerman’s 2010 memoir recounts her year in a Connecticut minimum security prison after attempting to help a drug-runner classmate from Smith College deliver a suitcase of money to an international drug ring.

Deadline reports that Taylor Schilling, who is best known from ‘Mercy‘ and ‘The Lucky One,’ has been cast as the highly sought-after lead. This adaptation will bring Kohan back to her element with a comedic, character-driven story featuring a strong female lead. ‘Orange is the New Black’ will mark Netflix’s third original series, including ‘House of Cards‘ and ‘Lilyhammer.’

Are you excited about Jenji Kohan’s next project? What is your favorite movie or television show set in prison?

The subject of this show sounds interesting, and I hear Jason Biggs will be jointing her as the only man in the women’s prison. I don’t have Netflix, but if they ever showed these shows on Showtime or HBO I would watch them. I’m loyal to those channels because I’m already hooked on Game of Thrones and Dexter. This season I started recording it with My Hopper DVR because I have a thousand hours to burn, so I just keep all of the episodes for convenience sake. It’s like having my own Netflix at home, on demand, so I can’t see why anyone would get Netflix for just one show.
