After enduring a string of abusive relationships, Jean (Jennifer Lopez) arrives — unannounced and unwelcome – at her estranged father-in-law’s ranch in Ishawooa, Wyoming, with her daughter Griff in tow. Griff’s father and namesake — Einar Gilkyson’s (Robert Redford) son and Jean’s late husband — died years ago in a fatal car crash while Jean was behind the wheel. Einar has never gotten over it and still blames Jean for his son’s death. Griff, the granddaughter he never took the opportunity to know, falls in love with the ranch; her grandfather; and his friend and business partner, Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman). As a result, Einar’s cold heart begins to thaw as he opens up to his granddaughter and last surviving connection to his son.
In An Unfinished Life, author Mark Spragg tells the story of an overdue homecoming; a tale of lasting love and forgiveness, a lesson in the power of letting go of the past. If you haven’t had the chance to read the book or see the movie, now’s the time.
Mark Spragg’s novel was adapted in 2005 by director by Lasse Hallström (“Cider House Rules,” “Chocolat”). The film stars Robert Redford, Jennifer Lopez, and Morgan Freeman.
