In case you’ve not yet heard, IFC and Funny or Die have teamed up for a six-part miniseries about a wealthy family in Texas, called “The Spoils of Babylon” – and there’s finally a trailer (below) to offer a look at the product of the partnership.
Tim Robbins plays Jonas Morehouse, aging oil tycoon and family patriarch. Kristen Wiig and Tobey Maguire play his dysfunctional children set to inherit the family empire – while carrying on an illicit love affair.
Topping off this madcap crew? Will Ferrell as author Eric Jonrosh. The show is theoretically an adaptation of Jonrosh’s best-selling book The Spoils of Babylon, but it’s important to note that Jonrosh and his book are both part of the fiction within the show’s concept. The cast is supported with such bold-faced names as Carey Mulligan, Jessica Alba, Michael Sheen, Haley Joel Osment, Val Kilmer, and Steve Tom.
The format of the miniseries is an interesting choice and one we don’t often see in the realm of comedy; given what we’re seeing in the trailer, it’s likely the six-parter will leave us wanting for more. Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele are the co-creators of the show which, set to premiere January 9.
