The Home and the World

Based On the book by Rabindranath Tagore

Ghare Baire (transl. The Home and the World) is a 1984 Indian Bengali-language romantic drama film directed and written by Satyajit Ray. The film is based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name, and stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Victor Banerjee, Swatilekha Chatterjee and Jennifer Kendal. The film has a complex portrayal of several themes including nationalism, women's emancipation, spiritual and materialistic takes on life, tradition versus modernism, and others. Ray prepared a script for it in the 1940s, long before he made his first film Pather Panchali.
