Published in 1931, it is one of the earliest novels to feature Detective Chief Inspector Maigret of the judicial police. The story involves Maigret's investigation of the murder of a diamond merchant at a crossroads in the Île-de-France. The novel has been translated into English three times and adapted for film and television four times.
