Oil for the Lamps of China

Oil for the Lamps of China is a 1933 novel by Alice Tisdale Hobart which became a bestseller in 1934. Its sales and influence among American novels set in China before the Chinese Revolution of 1949 were second only to Pearl S. Buck's The Good Earth (1931). It was originally published by Bobbs Merrill. It was reprinted, with an Introduction by historian Sherman Cochran, EastBridge Press in 2002 (ISBN 1891936085) Camphor Press (ISBN 978-1-78869-027-0) The novel describes the life in China of a young executive in an American oil company from the early 1900s through the Nationalist Revolution of the 1920s.
