Season of the Sun

by Shintarō Ishihara · first published 1956

Season of the Sun (太陽の季節, Taiyō no Kisetsu; published in English as Season of Violence) is a Japanese novel written in 1955 by Shintaro Ishihara, who later became a politician and was governor of Tokyo for 13 years from 1999 to 2012. It is the source of the name of the rebellious taiyōzoku (太陽族) youth culture which emerged after World War II. The novel won the 1956 Akutagawa Prize. In 2012, it inspired the name of Ishihara's short-lived national political party, the Sunrise Party (Taiyō no Tō).
